Photos: The Fung Wah Biennial Took Me On A Weird Art Field Trip - Gothamist

A man named Matthias hands me a flyer with the words Fung Wah Biennial printed across the front, and I've given my phone number to a young couple holding a giant clipboard. We're all surrounded by a group of forty excited people, and we're headed toward a very strange day. Last weekend I attended the Fung Wah Biennial , a twelve hour traveling art encounter that took me from lower Manhattan to Philadelphia and back amidst a near-sensory-overload of independent works. Loosely based around themes of human migration, the temporary show takes attendees (artists included) on road trips from Manhattan to Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, paying tribute to the now-defunct Chinatown Fung Wah line. Queens arts space Flux Factory, along with co-organizers Will Owen, Sally Szwed, and Matthias Borell (flyer guy) are the minds that brought.

Two couples, torn apart by Kan. factory shooting, bloody but reunited - Washington Post

Jesus Fierros was working the assembly line when he heard the gunshots. At first, he thought the staccato popping was just another everyday sound inside Excel Industries, a lawnmower plant in the small town of Hesston, Kan. But then he saw his coworkers sprinting towards the exit. As workers abandoned their posts, the plant’s machinery shuddered to a halt. “I thought the machinery exploded,” he told The Washington Post early Friday morning. As he tried to limp towards the exit, Fierros could hear the gunshots getting ever closer. But even as he feared the shooter would find him and he finish him off, his thoughts kept drifting to someone else: his girlfriend, who worked barely 50 feet away. “All I thought about was making sure my girlfriend made it out,” he said.

In-ear headphones that live up to the music-biz hype

Flare Audio is a tiny company based near Worthing in West Sussex. I mentioned its very nice R2 in-ear headphones last year in a review of some customised moulded ear-inserts from the Somerset company Snugs.Things have moved on for Flare since then. Its professional loudspeakers, which can cost £250,000 a set, have been finding a market in ultra-high-end cinemas. At the same time, Flare’s range of £24-£50 patented titanium earplugs named Isolate has become wildly popular,...

Best of 2017: Local artists and entertainers talk about the year’s great music, art, festivals

The News Tribune asked creatives to talk about the best A&E events of the year — preferably something they were not immediately connected to. Here is what they said.'WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER'"I was incredibly inspired by FEmn Fest and the self-described 'boss women' who willed a new festival into being in just a matter of months. I discovered new musicians and grooved to old favorites, ate amazing tacos from a woman-owned business, got my tarot read and my consciousness raised. Above...
