The mobile phone can serve as a rather convenient solution when it doubles up as a portable audio player, but that does not mean it is without its drawbacks. And taking a phone call while in the midst of enjoying one’s favorite music can often be a disruptive process, due to the lack of a proper microphone on most earphones today. And that is the kind of unnecessary disruption which Bose is looking to solve with their new headsets, the MIE2 and MIE2i.
Take a quick look at the number of headphones-totting commuters in the bus or on the train and one would come to a quick conclusion: the portable audio player which once allowed us to listen to our favourite audio files is fast going out of style. Instead, in its place is the new breed of mobile phones which feature built-in support for audio playback, thus largely eliminating the need for a dedicated portable audio player.
However, just like there are two sides to a coin, the convenience of converging technology does bring its own set of drawbacks as well. While a mobile phone can double up as a portable audio player, users often find themselves dealing with disruptions to their music playback when a call is received. In most situations, users have to manually fiddle with the phone to either allow the call through or reject it.
And for the most part, end-users typically avoid using the bundled earpiece, due to various reasons such as poor design and/or sub-optimal audio quality from the stock earbuds. Fortunately, Bose has a new solution for users faced with such an issue: audiophile-grade headphones with built-in microphones for seamless switching between a phone’s ‘music player’ and ‘telephone’ mode.
The MIE2 headset
According to Bose, the MIE2 and MIE2i mobile headsets are engineered with proprietary Bose® technologies to deliver improved audio performance and comfort, and feature advanced design for added portability. However, it is more than just a set of high-quality earphones: because of the inclusion of an inline microphone and a one-touch answer/end button, the MIE2 and MIE2i are considered to be highly optimized for use with mobile phones and as such are more suited for use on such devices.
Design-wise, the MIE2 and the MIE2i are largely identical, although one key feature separates them from each other. While the MIE2 is designed to be compatible with most mobile phones in the market, the MIE2i takes the ‘optimized for mobile phones’ idea one step further by being designed exclusively for use with Apple products such as the recent iOS-powered devices and the Macs. This is due to the fact that the microphone is specially configured to provide access to certain Apple products, while its in-line remote serves as a navigation tool around Apple’s software directories.
The MIE2i headset
Last but not least, Bose also announced the launch of the AE2 and IE2 headphones. Bose claims that the AE2 comes with new ear cushions made of memory foam that not only effectively conform to different head shapes, but help to distribute weight more evenly around the ear to reduce pressure points. This results in a more comfortable user experience fit for hours of listening.
